Meet the Doctors: Dr. Rosemary Melrose

Dr. Rosemary Melrose is an optometrist and partner at Brookside Optometric Group. Known around the office as Dr. Rosie, she has practiced optometry with her husband, Dr. Bob Melrose, since 1982. The most rewarding aspect of her job is the opportunity to educate patients about their eyes and vision so that they can make the best possible choices for their overall health.

During a typical day at the office, she enjoys seeing a variety of patients of all ages and different cultures, and learning from their unique life experiences. Dr. Rosie strives to create an atmosphere of trust when caring for her patients and is committed to their best interest, whether that means treating their vision problems herself, or referring them to a specialist.

One such experience happened when a normally healthy couple returned to the office three months after their routine eye exams. Dr. Rosie was shocked to see the wife wheel her husband into the exam room in a wheelchair—he was too weak to walk, and was only able to see the "big E" on the eye chart. They reported getting nowhere with his primary doctor and a local neurologist, and urgently asked Dr. Rosie for help. She was able to have him seen the next day at UCSF, where specialists discovered that he had contracted tuberculosis.

Dr. Rosie previously taught on the clinical faculty at the UC Berkeley School of Optometry and remains involved at the university by serving on the Dean’s Advisory Board. She also likes to mentor future optometrists.

Originally from Cleveland, she studied at Northwestern University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry. She continued her graduate studies at UC Berkeley, where she met her business and life partner, Dr. Bob. He was a fellow classmate, and as he likes to say, “It’s been love and eyeballs ever since.” The couple lives in Stockton and their twin sons are currently completing their studies in physical therapy and crop science.

Outside of the office, her activities range from book clubs to kayaking. Dr. Rosie and Dr. Bob enjoy traveling together, and they were recently able to visit the Red Rhino Orphanage in Kenya, which they have supported since 2007. The couple is also actively involved in the Stockton community, and frequently attend the Stockton Symphony, Stockton Heat, and UOP Women’s Basketball games.
