Dr. Josephine Laurel is an optometrist and partner at Brookside Optometric Group. Patient care is her highest priority, and getting to know her patients well helps her find the pair of glasses or contact lenses that will fit their needs.
Developing long-term relationships with patients is one of her favorite aspects of the job. She engages with her patients, working to improve both their eye health and overall lifestyle. She enjoys catching up with returning patients and learning about their professions and hobbies, as well as meeting new patients and addressing their eye health and vision needs.
One meaningful experience for Dr. Laurel took place during an optometric humanitarian trip. She handed a donated pair of very masculine bifocals to a 14-year-old-girl as her first pair of glasses. Even though the glasses were the closest match to her prescription, the girl refused to take them. Dr. Laurel encouraged her to try them on, and when the young girl finally tried on the glasses, her smile lit up the room. From that moment on, Dr. Laurel knew she could make a difference as an optometrist. She loves meeting young patients during their first eye exams, and helping them improve in school and other activities with a pair of glasses or contact lenses.
Dr. Laurel completed her undergraduate studies in biomedical engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and received her Doctor of Optometry degree from University of California, Berkeley. Prior to joining the team at Brookside Optometric in 2009, she worked with one of her sisters at an optometric practice in Dublin. The sisters continue to work together at the practice today.
Dr. Laurel grew up in Milpitas and now makes her home in Dublin. She is the daughter of Vietnamese refugees, and lives within minutes of her parents, two older sisters, and their families. She and her husband Marc have been married since 2012, and welcomed their first child last September, a daughter named Quinn. When she’s away from the office, Dr. Laurel and her husband love to travel, play board games, go to Giants and Warriors games, watch musicals, and dance.
